From graduation project to startup: the road ahead for EchoSense
EchoSense graduated from the Arab Academy with TV coverage and a working ecosystem. Here's our roadmap: pilots, local production, and affordable assistive tech at scale.
EchoSense began as a graduation project at the College of Computing and Information Technology, Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport in Cairo. It graduates as something more: a working two-product ecosystem, 121 tests passing on real hardware, television coverage, and a team that isn't done.
What we proved
- A wearable built from commodity parts can deliver 30 FPS obstacle detection, offline voice assistance, and clock-direction navigation — with safety logic that survives any AI failure.
- A phone can run a private multimodal companion: Gemma 4 on-device, encrypted memory, biometric stress tiers, and consent-bounded caregiver sync.
- The infrastructure can be built at roughly a quarter of the cost of international competitors — the claim we made on Watan Raqami, and the one we intend to keep proving.
What comes next
- User pilots — structured trials with blind users and autistic users and their families, measuring real-world outcomes, not lab demos.
- Hardware maturation — from validated prototype toward a manufacturable Echo 1: enclosure, battery life, wearability, durability.
- Local production — off-the-shelf components make in-country assembly realistic; affordability was the point from day one.
- Partnerships — schools, therapy centers, and disability organizations who want to shape the product; distribution in assistive tech runs through trust.
The team
Six engineers built EchoSense: Khaled Eissa and Mostafa Khalid on hardware and the safety engine; Yousef Haytham and Ahmed Khairallah on the mobile app and on-device AI; Sohila Alnahhas and Haidy Ahmed on UI/UX. The division of labor became the architecture — hardware safety isolated from AI, engine sophistication under interface calm.
The mission hasn't changed since the first sketch: independence should not be a luxury good. Private, capable, affordable assistive technology — built where it's needed, priced for the people who need it.
