A trained guide dog costs tens of thousands of dollars; commercial smart aids run $2,000+. How EchoSense targets a quarter of competitors' cost with commodity hardware.
The World Health Organization estimates over 250 million people live with moderate-to-severe visual impairment, and roughly 90% of them live in low- and middle-income countries. The assistive-technology industry mostly prices for the other 10%.
What independence costs today
- Guide dog — tens of thousands of dollars to breed and train, multi-year waiting lists, ongoing care costs, and a working life of about 8 years.
- Commercial smart aids and AI glasses — flagship devices typically run $2,000–$4,000, often plus a monthly subscription for the cloud AI features.
- White cane — affordable and irreplaceable, but it senses only what it touches: nothing at chest height, nothing beyond its tip, no drop-off until the last step.
How EchoSense breaks the price curve
Echo 1 is built entirely from commodity parts: a Raspberry Pi 5, a Hailo AI accelerator, an OV5647 camera, a TF-Luna LiDAR, and a NEO-7M GPS. No custom silicon, no proprietary sensors, no cloud contract baked into the price. As the team told Watan Raqami at our graduation showcase: we built the infrastructure at one quarter of the cost of international competitors.
- No subscription — the AI runs on the device, so there is no monthly cloud bill to pass on.
- Repairable — commodity parts mean local repair instead of shipping a sealed unit abroad.
- Locally producible — off-the-shelf components make in-country assembly realistic, which matters for import-heavy markets.
A wearable does not replace a cane or a dog — it layers information they can't provide: named obstacles at a distance, drop-off warnings, spoken navigation, and reading. The point is that this layer should not cost more than the family's car.
