Designing for sensory calm: UI principles from the Companion app
Predictable grids, muted motion, user-picked themes, one-tap escapes: the sensory-calm design principles behind EchoSense's interface for autistic users.
Most apps compete for attention: badges, confetti, pull-to-refresh dopamine. For many autistic users, that visual noise isn't engaging — it's exhausting. The EchoSense Companion is designed to the opposite brief: an interface that lowers arousal instead of raising it.
The principles
- Predictability beats novelty — the home screen is a stable grid where nothing moves, reorders itself, or appears by surprise. The same action lives in the same place, always.
- Motion is muted — transitions are short, easing is gentle, and nothing loops, pulses, or bounces for decoration.
- Color is chosen by the user — a theme picker lets each person set the palette that feels right to them; sensory comfort isn't one-size-fits-all.
- Sound is opt-in — no unexpected audio; narration and earcons only when requested.
- Everything critical is one or two taps deep — under stress, deep menus are unusable. Breathing, Echo, and SOS are immediately reachable.
- No punishment mechanics — no streaks to lose, no scores on mood, no red badges shaming a missed check-in.
Designed with, not just for
These rules came from iterating with real users and their families and from the lived-experience literature — not from assuming what 'calm' means. The theme picker exists precisely because testers disagreed about color: the correct palette turned out to be a setting, not a decision.
Calm and capable are not opposites
A common failure of 'special needs' software is condescension — stripping capability in the name of simplicity. The Companion runs a state-of-the-art multimodal model and live biometric analytics under an interface that whispers. Sophistication in the engine, serenity in the surface.
