Breathing, stories, and check-ins: regulation tools that respect the user

Inside the Companion app's regulation toolkit — guided breathing, AI-narrated calming stories with persona picker, and a daily mood check-in built for sensory calm.

Regulation tools only work if they're reached for. That means they must be one tap away, sensory-safe, and shaped by what actually calms this user — not a generic wellness template.

Calm Me Down: breathing without pressure

A slow visual guide expands and contracts; the user breathes with it. No countdown pressure, no streaks, no 'you failed the exercise.' When vitals suggest an elevated tier, Echo may gently offer it — an invitation, never an interruption.

Stories: narration with a chosen voice

The app offers curated calming stories plus AI-narrated ones, with a persona picker so the user chooses the voice that soothes them. Familiarity is regulation: the same voice, the same pace, on demand, at 3 a.m. if needed.

Are You Okay: a check-in, not a quiz

A daily mood survey builds a longitudinal record alongside the vitals data. Over weeks, patterns emerge — hard days cluster after poor sleep, good weeks track with certain routines. The user and, with consent, their caregiver can see the pattern instead of guessing at it.

Designed under the same rules as everything else

  • All narration and AI runs on-device; a story session generates zero network traffic about its content.
  • Every tool is reachable in one or two taps from the sensory-calm home grid.
  • Nothing gamifies distress — no scores to beat, no badges for 'calm days'.
What helped is remembered (privately): Echo's memory notes which tools actually worked, so next time it suggests the right one first.
